When I was young, I experimented with pastels and watercolors. But it wasn’t until I traveled “south of the tower” and settled near the ocean in South County that I found a renewed love for painting. With some persuasion from a fellow artist, I turned to oil paint and never looked back.
During a great workshop with David Curtis, I was introduced to the experience of painting “en plein air.” I learned to use a simplified palette in the field and allow for adding some highlights and accents back in the studio. I simply fell in love with the process, moving shape to canvas, finding the contrasting values and discovering the beautiful range of tones between. Painting like this helps me capture the mood, a moment in time, like part of a story before things move on.
